MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs have been receiving calls from families in the Philippines who want their relatives repatriated from Libya.
"The DFA 24-hotline, we have been receiving a lot of calls from families with relatives in Libya and the families would like the DFA to repatriate their families," DFA Assistant Secretary Charles Jose said.
However, he said there have been no new registrants for repatriation from Libya.
Jose said they can include the foreign spouse in the repatriation but clarified that the government will not shoulder their expenses.
"We can include foreign spouse in the repatriation but we cannot pay for them. Kapag gusto ng repatriation, we will only pay for the Filipino, not the foreign spouse, and hindi natin sasagutin yung pabalik nila," he said.
So far, only 520 Filipinos have been repatriated from Libya since alert level 3 was raised.
Libya is now under the DFA's crisis alert level 4 which calls for a mandatory repatriation of the estimated 13,000 Filipinos there.
Meanwhile, the embassy in Tripoli is likewise coordinating with the employer of the Filipino construction worker who was kidnapped and beheaded last week.
"We will try to facilitate the repatriation of the remains back to the Philippines as soon as possible," Jose said.
